Carbon Farm - Bioplastic Design

Carbon Farm is an interactive art piece developed by Jiabao Li and Ben J. Evanson that captures CO₂ from human breath and transforms it into bioplastic. Exhibited at SIGGRAPH 2024 in Tokyo, the project incorporated Shinto-inspired amulets, collaboratively designed by myself, Siyu Feng, and Ceren Ozgan.

----

In the Shinto tradition, visitors offer amulets at shrines after making prayers to Shinto spirits. Similarly, the algae-based amulets created for Carbon Farm serve as ecological offerings. Participants blow into the contraption, symbolizing a prayer for ecological peace, and gift their bioplastic amulet back to the machine, merging spiritual and environmental reflection. More information.

This project connects cultural ritual to environmental action, reimagining personal ecological relationships through design and technology.
